Math
Many grade fives had difficulty with the homework on the weekend. So that's why we took step back and worked with growing number patterns as a class. These are the important ideas to remember from today's lesson:

  • A growing pattern must increase in a predictable way. That means that it must have a pattern rule. Given the pattern rule, we should be able to predict any term in the pattern.

For example:

1, 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, 37

  • To find out the pattern rule, you must find the gaps between the numbers (subtract or add on). The gaps in the above pattern.....

+1, +3, +5, +7, + 9. + 11

Do you see the pattern rule?

Start at 1, add 1 then add 2 more each time.
or
Start at 1 add 1, then 3, then 5, then 7 and so on.

Using the pattern rule to predict the next few numbers in a pattern is fine. But what if we want to know the 50th term of a growing pattern? We have another strategy!

For the pattern below:

1, 5, 9, 13, 17

The pattern rule is pretty easy. Start at 1 add 4 each time. What will the 50th term be? 100th term?
The term is just the order of the numbers in a pattern. 1 is Term 1, 5 is Term 2, 9 is Term 3 and so on.

Let's organize the number pattern in a t-chart:

Term
Number
1
1
2
5
3
9
4
13
5
17

If we want to know the 50th term that's 49 more terms that we increase by 4 because 50 - 1 = 49
49 x 4 = 196 That's the amount we increase by in 49 more terms. But we have to add this to 1 because that's the number we started with. So the 50th term would be 196 + 1 = 197

The 100th term would be 100 - 1 = 99
99 x 4 = 396
396 + 1 = 397

I heard  A LOT of "I don't understand". Think about it for a bit. Try it with the lower terms.

Homework Question:

6, 10, 14, 18, 22

a) Write the pattern rule

b) Write the pattern in a t-chart

c) Find the 60th term (show your work)

d) Find the 80th term (show your work)

Social Studies
Today we talked about the characteristics of a DEMOCRACY.

  • FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS
  • FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS
  • ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY
  • RULE OF LAW
  • CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

Here is the link to the leaders of the major political parties, a bit about them and about what their party stands for. Pay close attention to their views on the ENVIRONMENT.

Religion
In Religion today we reviewed the story of the prophet Daniel. What is a prophet? Retell a parent the story of Daniel. If you don't remember....

We also watched the stories of Moses and of Jonah:

Each of the stories shows us that God's love is patient. He encourages us to be the best we can be. When we believe and trust in God, He will always be there for us.

Key questions....
Why is the Bible the word of God when people wrote it?
How are these stories in the Bible helpful to our faith?

Learning Skills
We talked a bit today about using FEEDBACK to improve. Some students are not using written or oral feedback and are making the same mistakes over and over again. On a report card that is NEEDS IMPROVEMENT.

Reminders:

  • Cross Country Meet cancelled. Return green shirt as soon as possible.
  • Phys. Ed. tomorrow. Have gym clothes and running shoes at school.
