Math
Today we talked about repeating patterns in grade four, but it was a challenge for grade five as well. When we are trying to extend and predict terms in a repeating pattern, it is important to identify the CORE first. The core is the repeating part of a pattern. A repeating pattern can be a shape pattern or a number pattern.

For example:

                 ___________________

What is the core of the following pattern?

Large red cube, small blue cube, large green cube, small red cube, large blue cube, small green cube

What is the 31st shape of this pattern? Well, we could keep drawing the cubes, but that takes too long. Instead we could give each shape in the core a number and use skip counting or multiplication to find the 31st shape.

         1       2    3         4    5         6

Every 6th shape in the repeating pattern will be a small green cube. So the 12th, 18th, 24th , 30th ..... shape will also be a small green cube. If the 30th shape is the small green cube, then the 31st term is the large red cube.

What is the 64th shape?
If the 30th shape is a small green cube, then the 60th shape will be a small green cube. To get to the 64th shape we just look at the fourth shape after the small green cube (60 + 4 = 64) which is a small red cube.

In grade five we began talking about GROWING SHAPE PATTERNS. We only had time to complete one example. A growing shape pattern grows the same way. It may or may not grow by the same amount, but you must use the shape before to get the next shape or term.

Let's look at this example:

                                               1                2             3             4              5
How is this pattern growing? The yellow squares help us see how it is growing. One tile is added to each column (3 tiles altogether each time).

Homework Questions: Complete in your yellow math notebook.
Grade 4
The core of a repeating pattern in....
What is the 53rd term? Explain how you know.
What is the 102nd term? Explain how you know.

Grade 5
The fifth term in a growing pattern is:

Draw the first four terms. Colour them NEATLY.

Bicycle Safety
We had a wonderful presentation on bike safety today. Share with a parent what you learned. What are the ABCs of bike safety? How do you check if your helmet fits and is on correctly? How do you signal left? right? stop?

Please remind me to hand out the maps of London showing the different bike routes.

Social Studies
Canada is a Parliamentary Democracy. It is also a Constitutional Monarch. We talked about other forms of government. Make sure you understand the following terms:
Democracy
Dictatorship
Monarchy
Oligarchy

If you are not sure.....WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN:

We also talked about different ways to make decisions.... autocratic, democratic and consensus
We agreed that we didn't like autocratic decision making when we are playing with our friends, but there are some circumstances where is it the best decision making process. What are a few examples when autocracy works well? Sometimes for a community to run smoothly, you need a blended approach..... even if your community is stranded on an island!

Literacy
Our first LITERARY DEVICE we talked about is ALLITERATION. Literary devices are writing strategies or techniques that make our writing sound better.

Make sure you have your alliterative flavours of ice cream done for tomorrow. Here is the link to the poem we listened to today:
