Math
Today we began representing DECIMAL numbers. Our place value system works in groups of ten. There are 10 ones in 1 ten, 10 tens in 1 hundred, 10 hundreds in 1 thousand. I hope you understood that playing the place value game this morning.

Here is a great video to explain this:

How can we represent decimals? In similar ways to fractions. A decimal is part of a whole just like a fraction.

  • Part of  a whole (ten frames work well)
  • Part of a set (hands, packages of 10 of something)
  • Number Line
  • Money (loonies are ones and dimes represent tenths of a dollar)
  • Place Value Chart
  • Words
  • Base Ten Blocks (use the squares I gave you)

Grade 4, please represent 3.3 all the different ways we did 0.3 in class. That's all you have to do for homework

Grade 5 unfortunately we didn't complete our different ways to show 0.47 except base ten blocks. You can express decimal hundredths as...

  • Part of a whole (base ten blocks)
  • Number Line (1 whole is divided into 100 parts - use millimetres on your ruler)
  • Money (loonie is the 1 whole, dimes the tenths and pennies the hundredths)
  • Words
  • Place Value chart

Part of a set is a bit tricky with groups of 100 so don't worry about that.

After you complete 0.47, choose one more decimal on your Action page to represent different ways. That's all you have to do for homework.

Writing
Today we talked about another literary device, puns. Using puns makes your story funny. Because the idea of your writing task is amusing, puns are easy to apply. The easiest way to apply a pun is with a name.... like Cluck Kent in our story today.

Religion
Make sure you choose an Old Testament prophet to research tomorrow. You will be looking for the meaning of the name of your prophet, the prophecy given to him or her by God,  what was going on at the time with the Israelites and their message of hope (what will happen if they listen to God).

You will have computer time tomorrow to work on this. Here is a link with some of the Old Testament Prophets. DO NOT CHOOSE ABRAHAM, MOSES OR NOAH.
