Math
Grade 5 you have a polygon test on Monday. Make sure you review the information from last Saturday's post. It is also glued in your green math notebook. You must be able to...

  • Sort concave and convex polygons
  • Identify regular and irregular polygons BY NAME
  • Know the properties of concave, convex, regular and irregular polygons
  • Draw polygons with a given angle measure
  • find the angle size of REGULAR POLYGONS (formula given on Thursday)

Here is the link to the funny polygon song we listened to in class:

In Measurement in both grades we have been talking about changing units of length and choosing the most appropriate units. We have also been changing units of length involving a decimal or part of a unit measurement.

Important to remember:
1 mm = 0.1 cm (one millimetre is one-tenth of centimetre)
1 cm = 0.01 m (one centimetre is one-hundredths of a metre)
1 cm = 0.1 dm (one centimetre is one-tenth of a decimetre)
1 mm = 0.01 dm (one millimetre is one-hundredth of a decimetre)
1 m = 0.001 km (one metre is one-thousandth of a kilometre)

As well as....
1 cm = 10 mm
1 dm = 10 cm
1 dm = 100 mm
1 m = 100 cm
1 m = 10 dm
1 m = 1000 mm
1 km = 1000 m

Learn the metric number line. Remember the units that are not normally used (hm and dam). However you have to know that they are there to understand the number line.

We will also be practicing expressing length or distance in more than one unit.

For example:
354 cm = 3 m 54 m = 3.54 m
12 mm = 1 cm 2 mm = 1.2 cm

You need to take some time and study the diagram above. Don't memorize .... understand. If you can't explain your answer, then you don't understand. Remember how digits shift on the place value chart when you multiply (left) and divide (right). Try these...

Art
In Art on Friday we talked about using value to create depth. We shaded to correct the illusion of intertwining ribbons. If you have THIN marker, bring them in. If you have not started your designs, think about using pencil crayons.

We added colour in between the ribbons, the pictures below shade with pencil crayon. If you finish your other art, try one of these. Love the one done on black paper.

Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to complete assignments during our "ketchup" time on Friday.

Reminders:
  • If you do not have all the information needed for your nutrient poster, please make sure it is gathered.
  • If you have access to a computer over the weekend, try to finish your letter to your pen pal. You know how exciting it is to get mail!
  • Bring in any food labels from home.
  • Study your times tables .... x6, x7, x8 next week (the tough ones)
  • Make sure your parents see your assessment folder. SET YOUR GOALS.
  • Habitat test will be returned on Monday.
