Make sure you complete / correct estimating sums and differences questions.
Grade 4
More practice subtracting 4-digit numbers with regrouping. If you are solving a word problem, you must answer the question in a sentence after you have solved the answer.
You can check your answer to a subtraction question by adding.
Grade 5
More challenging 2-step problem solving were assigned today.
WRITE IN WORDS BEFORE SOLVING THE PROBLEM THE TWO STEPS (operations) YOU MUST DO. Some problems can be solved different ways. Let's look at this example problem:
In October 1984, astronaut Marc Garneau became the first Canadian in space, aboard the Challenger shuttle. In January 1992, astronaut Roberta Bondar become the second Canadian in space, aboard the Discovery shuttle. How many months passed between the first and second Canadians in space? Show your work.
Step 1: Find the number of years between October 1984 and January 1992 by subtracting
Step 2: Multiply the answer by 12 because there are 12 months in a year.
The challenge in this problem is the months in each year are different. Adding up using a number line works well with this problem.
Step 1:
Step 2: 7 years x 12 months in one year = 84 months + 3 months = 87 months
87 months passed between the first and second Canadian in space.
It is important to organized your thinking when solving problems with multi-steps.

Some students are still having difficulty following the rules for writing dialogue. Take your writing books home and correct all errors. Look at your mistakes. Do not repeat them. Read my feedback.
