Review your test and complete your practice test. Tomorrow I will mark your practice test so you are ready for your retest on Wednesday. Make sure you complete all math corrections, Skills Bank grade 4 and Mid-Chapter Review grade 5.
Today we started adding decimal tenths. Adding decimals is similar to adding whole numbers. 10 tenths are regrouped as 1 one because 10 tenths = 1 whole.
The practical application of decimal tenths is important. Our example in class was pencils in packages of 10. How many pencils are 3.4 tenths packages?
There are a few ways to add decimals. For example 3.6 + 5.8
1. You can express the decimal as tenths.
36 tenths + 58 tenths (make an easier question) 34 tenths + 60 tenths = 94 tenths = 9.4
2. You can add the whole numbers then add the decimals.
3 + 5 = 8 0.6 + 0.8 = 1.4 8 + 1 = 9 0+ 0.4 = 9.4
3. You can use a number line or add in chunks by decomposing the smaller decimal.
(3.6 = 0.2 + 3 + 0.4)
4. You can write the decimals vertically and add using the standard algorithm. Decimals MUST be
lined up.
1
3.6
+ 5.8
9.4
When we estimate decimal tenths, we round to the nearest WHOLE NUMBER.... NO DECIMAL. The same rounding rules apply.
5.6 + 3.2 is about 6 + 3 = 9
Writing
Do you remember all the rules for writing dialogue? Please make sure you correct your errors. Often times students are making the same mistakes over and over and not learning from feedback.
Your next writing task will be writing a story about your cartoon character. Your character is going to on a journey and meet different people or characters. Think about some ideas.
Religion
Tomorrow we celebrate Pancake Tuesday aka Mardi Gras aka Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent. The tradition of eating pancakes dates back from long ago in England when it flour, eggs and butter were used up before the fasting season of Lent. You ate a lot so you could make it through the fasting of Lent.
Shrove comes from the English word shrive which means to ask for forgiveness of your sins and doing penance (which is part of what we do in Lent).
Large Mardi Gras celebrations take place across in different locations around the world including New Orleans, USA, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and Venice, Italy. To celebrate Mardi Gras we will be creating Mardi Gras masks. Feel free to bring in feathers or jewels to decorate your mask. The traditional colours of Mardi Gras are gold, purple and green.
A pancake with syrup will be served to you in the morning. If you would like to bring in any nut-free toppings such as berries / whip cream for yourself, you are most welcome.
Science
Most students have completed their exploration. We will talk a bit about your conclusions and move onto renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Finish your definition page.
