Math
More angle practice today. It is soooooo important that you know your benchmark angles (both grades). When you are measuring angles it is easy to use the wrong scale on the protractor. Classifying your angles as well as measuring will help "catch" any mistakes.

You do not need to know how to measure reflex angles in grade five. How do you think you would measure a reflex angle? Hint: a full circle is 360 degrees.

Have a parent check your homework tonight. Precision is important when doing any kind of measurement.

Grade 4 recognizing and describing angles using benchmark angles is the MOST IMPORTANT learning goal. Technically, you don't have to measure angles in grade four, but it's good to know.

Types of angles in terms of benchmarks:
  • Less than half a right angle
  • Greater than half a right but less than a right angle
  • Greater than a right angle but less than a straight angle
  • Greater than a straight angle
Use your hands or arms to understand the size of angles. How wide the arms of your angle are apart determines the size of your angle. The length of the arm is not important. Use your folded benchmark paper.

When you are measuring angles with a protractor in your booklet, use a ruler to extend the length of the arm so you can read the scale. This does not affect the angle measure.

Science
Today we talked about the ways we use plants and animals every day. Did you read a book, eat cereal, wear a sweatshirt, have a glass of milk, sit in a chair or use a pencil? If you did you used a plant or animal product. What were some uses of plants and animals that you didn't even think of? We will continue with our group lists tomorrow.

We also talked about the 5Rs. We all know the 3Rs but what are the other two? They are the most important Rs!

Tomorrow we are going to talk about the costs and benefits of using plants and animals and then we are finished the content part of our unit. You will also be given your culminating project outline.

Reminders:
  • Science test next Thursday.
  • Project building next Friday.
  • Finish your endangered and extinct animal slides as soon as possible.
  • Slide on your Old Testament Prophet
  • Hot chocolate and cookies tomorrow for the Feast of St. Nicholas

There are many assignments that must be done before the holidays. Don't get behind.
