Math
Today we talked about multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. We used base ten blocks to show this. For example, what multiplication question do the following base ten blocks show?

6 hundreds = 6 x 100 = 600

What if we used tens blocks. How many tens blocks in 6 hundreds?

1 hundred = 10 tens so we would have 60 tens.

60 tens = 60 x 10 = 600

Some students see a pattern and say when you multiply by 100 you add 2 zeros, 1000 3 zeros and 10 1 zero. Although this is true, what is really happen is the digits are being moved on the place value chart.

Tomorrow we will look at dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. These are skills we MUST know in order to change units of length.

Quadrilateral Test (Grade 4) / Triangle / Polygon Test (Grade 5) next Thursday.

Science
  • Habitat test next Wednesday. You need to study.....
  • How changes in habitats affect plants and animals (natural and human changes)
  • Endangered and extinct animals
  • How people depend on plants and animals
I'll give more specific questions on the weekend.

Health
We talked about the new Canada's food guide. Talk to a parent about the recommendations in the new guide. How is it different from the old guide? What do you notice about the plate?

We also began our discussion of NUTRIENTS. What are nutrients? Nutrients are substances found in food that keep our body healthy. It's the reason we eat. We need them to survive.

Nutrients can be divided into macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients.

Macro-nutrients include PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATES AND FATS

Micro-nutrients include VITAMINS and MINERALS.

We need more of the macro-nutrients than the micro-nutrients.

Examples of micro-nutrients include:
Vitamin A
Vitamin B (lots of different kinds)
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
Vitamin K

Calcium
Phosphorus
Potassium
Magnesium
Iron

There are a few other minerals that you need in very small quantities.

Choose one macro and one micro-nutrient. You are going to do a short assignment on them. Try to pick  nutrients that you don't know much about.

Writing
About 10 students completed their persuasive letter. You were given three periods to finish this task. You have 1 more period to finish tomorrow. On Friday we have the computers to complete our final draft as well as complete our pen pal letter. NO EXTRA CLASS TIME WILL BE GIVEN. You cannot take this assignment home.

Congratulations to students who worked INDEPENDENTLY  and SELF-REGULATED to complete their writing.
