Math
So far in our unit on Addition and Subtraction, you should know how to add and subtract 4-digit numbers (grade 4) and 5-digit numbers (grade 5).

Some vocabulary:

There are several strategies we have discussed for both. Being able to regroup and understand regrouping e.g. trading 1 hundred for 10 tens, is important. We regroup in both addition and subtraction. Subtraction across zeros is challenging for some students.

Addition Strategies:

  • Standard Algorithm (adding from right to left with regrouping)
  • Adding places (adding from left to right)
  • Making an easier question (redistributing the addends to make an easier question)

Subtraction Strategies:

  • Standard Algorithm (subtracting from right to left with regrouping)
  • Making and easier question (subtracting or adding the same number to the minuend and subtrahend)
  • Adding up using a number line
These are skills we have discussed in class. There are also skills from previous years that you MUST know. You must know your basic addition and subtraction facts FLUENTLY. You should not be counting on your fingers or in your head. If you are, then you need to PRACTICE

As well, the expectation in Grade 4 is adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally. We discussed many strategies at the beginning of the year. They are posted at the front of the room. Can you find these sums and differences in your head?

With respect to problem solving, look for key words in the problem to help you decide which operation is needed to arrive at a solution. Some of these key words are posted in the classroom. The most important step in solving a problem is READING THE PROBLEM CAREFULLY. Here are the rest of the steps in our CUBES strategy:

We will continue with solving addition and subtraction word problems on Monday. Test will be coming soon. After our addition and subtraction detour, we will continue with multiplication and division.

Art
There are so many wonderful artists in the classroom. However, some students are taking too long to complete art assignments. Please finish your assignments at home. Many students would like to move onto the next project.

Buddies
Both Mrs. Stinebrickner and Mrs. Hatfield commented on the patience you showed helping your Kindergarten Buddies complete their Valentine pets. BRAVO!

Reminders:
  • Report card envelopes, page 4 and interview sheet returned as soon as possible.
  • Book Fair on TUESDAY.
  • For students absent on Friday, please complete your pen pal letter.
  • Class list posted below for students who wish to distribute Valentine cards on FRIDAY. Remember we have many allergies in the classroom so best wishes on cards only.
