Science
Today we reviewed the main renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We also took a closer look at how fossil fuels are formed. Here is the video we watched in class. Use the video as a guide to write in your own words how oil and coal are formed. Natural gas is formed similar to oil, but under greater heat and pressure.

Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking  is a more complicated method used now to get natural gas from deep within the earth. Here is a video explaining how this works:

Religion
Make sure you complete your Lenten promises. At least one for each of the pillars of Lent. Remember to be specific and colour your foot in a way that reflects the solemnity or holiness of Lent.

Writing
Most of you have the outline of your story completed. It's good to have a plan before writing to keep you on track and focused as you write. Most of you "hatched a good plot," as Henrietta would say. Remember your characters must meet other characters in the story. Five characters to be more precise. You want to use dialogue to move the story along. You may also use narrative, but it's important that you learn to let the speaker's words tell what is going on.

Math
Today we worked on finding the change to purchases. Although we don't always pay with cash nowadays, it's important to understand how to calculate total purchases and change. When we find the change from a purchase, it is the amount we get back after giving our money to the cashier. We can use the same adding and subtracting strategies when finding the total (adding) and finding the change (subtracting).

If we bought 2 items from the store for $24.99 and  $15.44, what would be the change from $50.00?

Step 1: Add to find the total amount spent. I would make an easier question because adding numbers with nines are more difficult. Zeros are our friends when adding.

Step 2: Subtract to find the change.

$24.99 (+1)  $25.00
$15.44 (-1)   $15.43
                     $40. 43

To find the change from $50.00 you can ......

Add up using a number line:

The grade fives have an extra step because they have to add to find the total cost, then subtract to find the change.

It is important that you are able to quickly recall pairs of 2-digit numbers that add to 100 or in the case of money, $1.00. This makes adding up REALLY EASY.

What do you add to 68 to make 100? Think of the amount of tens that will give ninety and then the ones that will make 10. 6 tens + 3 tens = 90 and 8 ones + 2 ones = 10. So the answer is 32.

Take your time completing homework. Do not rush and make careless errors.
